27 ways to live a better life with celiac disease

So, you’ve just been crowned with the celiac tiara, struggling to navigate this new gluten-free realm, and let’s face it, feeling like crap even though you’re eating gluten-free. Worried about what the future holds? Yeah, we’ve all been there. It’s the primary reason I birthed the Gluten Dude blog in 2011 because, truth be told, I wasn’t basking in the glory of my celiac life. I needed a change.

Fortunately, I made that shift and never looked back. But hey, it’s not just me; many of us in the celiac community have figured out the art of coping with our disease.

So, I put the question to the celiac community: What pearls of wisdom would you toss to the newly diagnosed or those who are struggling? Not the run-of-the-mill “avoid this and that” advice, because anyone can Google that stuff. What have YOU, as a celiac life survivor, learned that you wish you knew when you first got hit with the gluten hammer?

Here’s a smattering of their wisdom:

  1. Trivialization Alert: Brace yourself for the trivialization of your illness from all quarters – doctors, friends, and even the ever-so-helpful waitstaff who insist, “There’s never been a better time to go gluten-free.” Rise above it.
  2. Food Pros in the Dark: Beware of food professionals who have zero clue about what they’re tossing into their dishes.
  3. Symptom Whack-a-Mole: Some symptoms will vanish pronto, like migraines and bloating, while others play hard to get. Be gentle with yourself; recovery takes time.
  4. Unwanted Weight Gain: Going gluten-free isn’t a surefire weight-loss ticket. Some folks, like yours truly, actually gained weight. Unexpected side effect alert!
  5. Relationship Roulette: Brace for the potential breakdown of friendships and family ties. Celiac life can be socially ostracizing. Some will tire of your gluten-free woes, and others, well, you might just tire of their “I eat gluten-free for health reasons” nonsense.
  6. Apology Tour: Get ready for a guilt trip – you’ll spend a good chunk of time apologizing for your condition. Over time, you’ll stop, but initially, you might feel like a burden.
  7. Depression and Anxiety Spike: Research suggests higher levels of depression and anxiety among celiac folks, especially the young ones. Celiac is a 24/7 gig with no off switch. Don’t let it consume you.
  8. Gluten Ninja: Gluten can be sneaky. Check the ingredients of EVERYTHING. Even seemingly innocent places like your oral contraceptive pill or cold and flu tablets can be lurking with gluten.
  9. The Light at the End: Buckle up; you’ll start feeling better. Eyes clearer, fog lifted, migraines gone, pain a distant memory. It’s a slow dance, but it happens.
  10. Empowerment Avenue: Knowing you don’t need medication and can largely control this illness is empowering.
  11. Relationship Shake-up: Sure, you’ll lose some relationships, but in their stead, you’ll gain a newfound appreciation for those who get you. The little things become big things.
  12. Strength Discovery: Prepare for long days, tough weeks, maybe even months, but discover a strength you never knew existed. You’ll find your tribe – people who make you feel exactly as you should: celiac sucks, but it’s not your fault, you’re not a burden, and you’re not alone.
  13. Knowledge is Celiac Power: Dive into knowledge. Celiac is less daunting armed with information. It gets easier every day.
  14. Attitude is Celiac Gold: Attitude is your trusty companion on this journey. Keep your chin up, don’t apologize for having a disease beyond your control, and explore new gluten-free delights.
  15. Avoid Processed Foods: Stick to fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, wine – the real deal. Keep it simple, savor whole foods.
  16. Celiac Detective: You’ll connect seemingly unrelated issues to celiac. Fatigue, nerve issues, mood swings – it’s all part of the celiac package.
  17. Learning Curve: It’s a learning curve; take it slow, build your knowledge base, and brace for the painful mistakes. You’ll learn, adapt, and move forward.
  18. Be Your Advocate: Advocate for yourself. If something feels off, fight for your doctors to listen. Your health is non-negotiable.
  19. Life Goes On: Your life marches on, but gluten stays behind. Yeah, you’ll feel anger and frustration, but shift your mindset – focus on what you CAN eat.
  20. Time is a Celiac Healer: It takes time. Patience is the hardest part, but take it one step at a time, and things become second nature sooner than you think.
  21. Cooking is Key: Learn to love cooking. Experiment with tasty gluten-free delights. Don’t take any food for granted, and be kind to yourself when you slip up.
  22. Acceptance is Liberation: Accept that maybe perfect health isn’t in the cards, and that’s okay. Acceptance is liberating.
  23. Give Yourself Permission to Grieve: Grieve the loss of your pre-celiac life, navigate the uphill battles with friends and family, and embrace the radical changes. But don’t linger in grief; move forward.
  24. Sense of Humor: Keep that sense of humor alive! Laugh at yourself and life’s challenges whenever you can. Just like Gluten Dude.
  25. Live Your Life: Celiac’s a bump in the road, but a manageable one. Adjustments are inevitable, but you’re reclaiming your health, and that’s what truly matters.
  26. Fear-Mongering Alert: Amidst the online fear-mongering about what you can’t eat, stick with the facts. Don’t live in perpetual fear of gluten; it’s not omnipresent. You CAN lead a normal life with a few tweaks.
  27. Precautions and Common Sense: Take precautions, educate yourself, use common sense, and when in doubt, skip it. Have any burning questions? Ping me. I’ll set you straight.

And finally, here is my biggest piece of advice. You have to live your life. Don’t let celiac hold you back. It’s a bump in the road, but it’s a bump that is manageable. I promise.

Yes, you’re in for some serious adjustments.

Yes, your body’s on a healing timetable.

Yes, a smidgen of your freedom and spontaneity might bid adieu.

But guess what? You’re reclaiming your health, and that’s the real victory.

Now, brace yourself for the online fear parade. “You can’t have this,” they’ll chant, and “stay away from that,” they’ll warn. Some of it is legit; some of it is pure hogwash. Stick to the facts.

Don’t let gluten-induced fright paralyze your life. No matter what people say, it’s NOT everywhere and you CAN lead a normal life (with a few adjustments).

Take precautions. Arm yourself with knowledge. Unleash your common sense. And if uncertainty looms, skip it.

Got burning questions? Just ping me. I’ll set you straight.
